Grayson County, Virginia Federal Census — 1940 District Index
Indexed and Contributed by Gil Wetmore, support by Ginger Ballard
The 1940 U. S. Federal census records were released by the US National Archives April 2, 2012. Since that time there has been a massive undertaking to index these records by several organizations. Our own Gil Wetmore, supported by Ginger Ballard, has given researchers of Grayson County, Virginia genealogy a head-start by providing this Grayson index well in advance of national efforts. The official start date of the 1940 census was April 1, 1940 and a full list of questions asked for this census may be viewed at Archives.gov. Before you review the questions, take the following information into account:
There were 132 million people living in the 48 Continental United States in 1940. Many of these people are considered to be part of the “greatest generation” ever lived. These are persons who:
- Survived the Great Depression;
- Fought in the Second World War;
- Innovated technology (TV, Microwave);
- Sacrificed in the name of freedom;
- Practiced thrift and compassion, and
- Understood hard work and industry
Census images, at the National Archives, and this index are organized by enumeration district number. Search any of the Magisterial District/Town indices by clicking on it (e.g., Independence); once you’ve located your relative note the district, household and image number then select the Enumeration District (e.g., 39-1) to browse the census image(s) to look for your ancestor(s).
