Grayson County, Virginia

Grayson County was authorized on 7 November 1792, and was formally organized in 1793. Grayson County was formed from Wythe County. The original county courthouse was in Old Town. The courthouse and all records were moved to the the newly established town of Independence about 1851.

The eastern part of Grayson Co. was lost to the formation of Carroll Co. in 1842. The independent city of Galax was formed from Grayson and Carroll in 1953.
