About New River Notes
Overview
New River Notes was launched in January 1998 by Jeffrey C. Weaver as a resource to assist New River Valley researchers in their quest to unravel the past. It has become a valuable resource for many researchers. This site is now owned and operated by the Grayson County, Virginia Heritage Foundation as a free resource for all to use. The goal of the GCVHF is to maintain the site and add content so that the site will continue to serve all.
We will need contributions from many to achieve our goals. If you can help by contributing new pages, correcting existing pages, editing the contributions of others, providing technical support, etc. please Contact Us.
In the Beginning:
As a devout area historian and genealogist Jeff Weaver felt compelled to leverage the web technology and presented his work for historical and genealogical research. Initially the site contained articles written by or contributed to Jeff plus links to many external web sites. The New River Notes project focused on and continues to focus on the Upper New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia including, Alleghany, Ashe, Surry, Watauga, Wilkes and Yadkin Counties in North Carolina and Bland, Carroll, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington and Wythe Counties in Virginia.
The Growing Years:
Since our humble beginning in 1998 many contributors have sent in items for inclusion in New River Notes thus making it what it is today. The bulk of these items have been related to Grayson, Ashe, and Alleghany but all of these counties are covered.
Listed below are many, but not all, of the contributors who helped Jeff Weaver build this site.

Where we're going:
New River Notes is now owned by the Grayson County, Virginia Heritage Foundation, Inc. and we fully intend to continue the work started by founder Jeff Weaver.
In 2012 and 2013 a small team spent hundreds of hours cleaning up the web pages on the site. We now have over 1700 web pages that meet current HTML standards. This cleanup along with the use of good site management software will make future growth and maintenance easier to achieve.
Our plan is to continually add content from our own research as well as to solicit the support of individuals and other genealogical and research organizations within the New River Valley Counties. We hope that this collaborative effort will keep New River Notes as a premier source for the research community.
It is with deep gratitude to Jeff Weaver that the Grayson County, Virginia Heritage Foundation is able to continue the great work he has done in documenting the Upper New River Valley history and family history.
