THIS PROPERTY IS NOW THE GROUNDS OF THE SALTVILLE MEDICAL CENTER.

Saltville - Red Men Lodge812 viewsTHIS SCENE APPEARS TO BE IN THE WELL FIELD AREA WITH THE GEORGIA SALT FURNACE AREA BEYOND THE TREES.

IT APPARENTLY WAS SOME KIND OF CEREMONY OF THE RED MEN LODGE. THE LONG ARROW TRIBE NO. 24 BEGAN IN SALTVILLE IN 1907. THE LODGE CEASED TO EXIST IN THE EARLY 1950s. WHEN THEY BROKE UP THEY WERE MEETING IN THE TOP OF THE COMPANY STORE ON THE EAST END. This photo is dated September 20, 1913. Courtesy of Don Smith dsmith1043@comcast.net

JULY24MGSJAN1980701.jpg809 viewsTHIS IS WHAT THE MATHIESON GENERAL STORE LOOKED LIKE FROM THE INSIDE ON THE SECOND FLOOR JUST BEFORE IT WAS DEMOLISHED IN JANUARY OF 1980.

THE WEST SIDE FRONT CORNER BEGAN TO LOSE BRICKS AND FINALLY THE HOLE OPENED UP. THE STORE HAD BEEN CLOSED FOR SOME TIME. WORK HAD ALREADY LEVELED THE OLD SUPER X / IGA MARKET THAT HAD OPENED IN NOVEMBER OF 1955.

THE WALLS WERE SOLID BRICK...THREE WIDE. THEY BUILT IT WELL IN 1894.
