The shot was taken from atop White Top Mountain roughly 25 miles south of Red Rock as the crow flies. At the time, Saltville's downtown temperature was 45 degrees and the temperature on White Top was 27 degrees.

His parents were Reuben Potter Jr. and Martha V. Lewis. After moving to Oregon he married Myrtle Fae Byers July 16,1917. Conley Potter died Jan. 29.1961 at Walla Walla, Wa. and he is buried at Fossil, Wheeler Co., Or. Mrytle Fae Byers died Sept. 4,1928 at Wasco Co. Or. and she is buried at Wasco, Or.
