Battery A, Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery — 1898
Battery “A,” First Brigade, National Guard of Pennsylvania, located in Philadelphia, Captain Barclay H. Warburton commanding in compliance with the orders of the Governor of Pennsylvania, reported at Mt. Gretna, Pa., on Thursday, April 28, 1898, for the purpose of volunteering in the war with Spain, and was mustered into the United States Volunteer service on May 6, 1898, as Light Battery “A,” Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery, and consisted of four officers and seventy-eight enlisted men. This battery was the first volunteer organization mustered into the United States service from the State of Pennsylvania.
In compliance with Special Orders No. 101, Department of the East, dated May 9, 1898, Light Batteries “A” and “C,” Pennsylvania Volunteer Artillery, on May 10, 1898, proceeded by rail to Newport News, Virginia, arriving May 11th. They were assigned to duty guarding the ship yards of the Newport News Ship and Engine Building Company, where ships were under construction for the United States government. Camp was established on ground adjoining the ship yards. The battery remained at this point performing the usual camp and guard duties until August 4, 1898, when it was ordered it was ordered to report to Major General Miles, commanding United States Army, at Port Ponce, Porto Rico. The battery embarked on the U.S. transport Manitoba August 5, 1898, and arrived at Porto Rico August 10, 1898 where camp was established. The commanding officer reported to General Miles, and the battery was detailed for duty at the Headquarters of the Army. Shortly after landing the camp was moved to a point two miles beyond Ponce. On August 30, 1898, the battery was ordered home and embarked on September 3rd on S.S. Mississippi arriving in Jersey City, N.J. September 10, 1898, moved to Philadelphia and was furloughed for sixty days preparatory to muster-out. While in the U.S. Volunteer service the battery’s full complement consisted of four officers and one hundred and sixty enlisted men. Five enlisted men were lost by death between the dates of muster in and muster out of the Volunteer service. During the furlough Battery “A” participated in the Peace Jubilee celebration in Philadelphia, and were finally mustered out of the United States Volunteer service on November 20, 1898.
