Grayson County, Virginia Birth Records 1853 to 1879
Compiled by – John Perry Alderman, Billie White, and Ginger Ballard
This data was transcribed from the birth records of Grayson County, Virginia. Original spellings have been retained as much as possible. For example, a Wright birth might be recorded as a Rite. In addition there are without doubt transcription errors due to both difficulties in deciphering handwriting and disconnects between brain and fingers. Records for years up to 1870 (except 1867) have been verified against the original records at the court house. Data for 1867 and the later years was transcribed from microfilm and have not been verified.
In addition to modern transcription errors there are many in the actual records themselves. Several births were reported as occurring in two different years. In the case of the 1869/70 duplicate entries, the 1870 reports are not included in this listing as census data clearly indicate the actual birth year was 1869. Birth dates indicated by “187_” are undated but occurred in the 1870s.
No records were maintained during the War years. Old Town Dist. for 1876 is missing from record. Also, page 188 is missing from the film or around 30 records.
In the case of slave births no surname was recorded for the child or his or her mother and as a substitute the surname of the owner is shown in square brackets [ ]. This is not intended to indicate use of this surname after the War but rather to provide a possible indication of the location of the family within the county.
Unless otherwise noted, birth place is given as Grayson County.
The 1853 to 1879 birth records are split into the following five alphabetical sections:
