Federal Census of Alleghany County, North Carolina — 1870

Transcript By J. C. Weaver 1992

Foreword

The following transcript of this census is presented in hopes of making genealogical and historical research easier.

The population census is presented by township. Data presented is Name, age, race (if white no notation is given, B is for black people and M is for mulatto); occupation for persons over 10 (if no occupation is given none was listed or was listed as “at home”); and place of birth (if none is given then assume that the original schedule indicated North Carolina as a place of birth). A sequence number is included in these table to aid in sorting the files into their original order.

I hope that this transcript is helpful in not only discovering your roots, but in helping determine information about their daily lives. Your indulgence is requested, as always, and forgive misinterpretation of names and dates, as you know they can be very difficult to read, especially if one is not particularly interested in a family or has done no research into the family. Knowing what should be presented helps in many cases decided what is presented. Good Luck!

Townships are as follows:

Cherry Lane

Cherry Lane Township

Note that the transcriber of this file identify with (f) or (m), next to the given name, only for those whose name isn’t clearly female or male. Similarly, race was only marked when for those individuals identified as black, mulatto or a white individual in an otherwise black or mulatto household.

An ascending ‘Sequence’ sort shows the table as it was actually recorded on the census.
