Smyth County, Virginia Justices of the Peace 1832-1869

This list is found in the Clerk of Court’s Office, Marion, Virginia. The Dates are somewhat ambiguous as to exactly what should be what. At any rate, it is what it is, and is presented here for your information.

Justices of the peace formed, in Virginia local government, the legislative, executive and judicial government of the individual counties until the reconstruction constitution of 1869-1870. (The Underwood Constitution). The gentlemen justices were appointed by the governor and not directly elected by the people of the county. These men were entrusted with all manner of duties, ranging from levying taxes, appointed constables, appointing court officers, deciding issues in dispute of a minor nature, etc.

This record lists 135 men who serves as Justice of the Peace in Smyth County in the 1832-1869 period.
