January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

New River Notes, a leading genealogy resource for the New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia, launched its new look website today.

A Few Notes From Washington County, Virginia Estray Book 1, 1813-1860

This is an interesting and useful book of WCV records which is combined on the reel with the Overseers of the Poor of WCV at the Archives of VA, Richmond. A small sample of information from this book is presented below:

p. 1: Being first duly sworn to view and appraise an Estray steer taken by by DAVID WORLEY of WCV, and suppose him to be 3 years old last spring his coulor (colour) a dark red with some white in the lower part of the tail, marked with 2 smothe (smooth?) crops. Appraised to $11. Given under our hands this 01 Day of Sep 1813. /s/ HUGH JACKSON; ABRAHAM SELLS; SAMUEL JOHNSTON

p. 9: Pursuant to the within Warrant to us directed we have this day viewed 2 Estray Heifors shown us by JOHN BRODDY, one a light brindle with some white on her back, the other a dark brindle with a white face with no ear mark. The first mentioned is markd. with a swallowfork in the right ear and a crop and slit in the left. Each of which appraise to $4.
