New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

Old Meadow Creek Church Cemetery

aka John Simcock Cemetery

Grayson County, Virginia

Location: South of Galax

Directions: This cemetery is on a hilltop beside Meadow Creek Road (Rt 607), 0.3 mile west from the Mt. Vale United Methodist Church. The cemetery is barely visible from the road.

GPS Coordinates: N36.60936 W80.93903

Surveyed by: Buford C. Wilson and Carol Lindamood 13 Dec 2006; updated 15 May 2008

Comments: This appears to be a very large cemetery, possibly 50 or more graves. We were only able to locate 3 markers with inscriptions. Most of the graves are marked with field stones or indicated by sunken ground. In an earlier survey the DAR and Paul Herndon reported 5 legible markers. This cemetery has been called the John K. Simcock Cemetery, but it appears that this is the site of the old Meadow Creek Church and Cemetery. From the files of Gloria Arehart, J.J. and Lydia Simcock South gave 1 and 1/2 acres of land for the church in 1830. The church was burned in 1844 by an afflicted man. He lived in the household on the adjoining property. There is what appears to be an old roadbed in front of the cemetery and a level spot below that where the church building would have stood. Genealogy information is from the files of Bette Nelson.
