New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

Higgins Farm Cemetery (A - A)

Grayson County, Virginia

Location: South of Galax

Directions: This cemetery is on a hillside on the east side of Meadow Creek Road (Rt 607) 0.1 mile from its intersection with Davis Knob Road (Rt 787). Turn left into the field at the first gate after passing the cattle barns on the other side of the road and drive towards the top of the hill.

GPS Coordinates: N36.60233 W80.94142

Surveyed by: Carol Lindamood and Buford C. Wilson 13 Dec 2006

Comments: A local resident said that this used to be a large cemetery with field stone markers, enough to be seen from the road. They have been removed and the only marked stone has been removed and placed beside the adjoining fence. This cemetery appears to be on land owned by Thomas Higgins who came to the Meadow Creek area from Alleghany County North Carolina in the 1830s. A large spring called the "Higgins Spring" is located nearby. Higgins had a number of slaves before the Civil War and this may have started as a slave cemetery. In the 1880 Grayson Census, Scilla Higgins was a black housekeeper that lived in this area. This child may have been her daughter. This information is from the files of Elizabeth Lewis and Gloria Arehart. It is very likely that this is an old African American Cemetery.
