New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

Anders Family Cemetery

Independence, Grayson County, Virginia

Location:  Original location south of Independence near the north end of the US 21 bridge over the New River.

Directions:  From the junction of New River Parkway (US 21/221) and Old River Rd.(Rt 700) go west on Old River Rd about until it winds around and under the US 21 bridge. The cemetery location is reportly near this point.

The markers now are on the margin of the Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery, 1.35 miles south of the intersection of Main Street (U.S. 58) and New River Parkway in Independence. These graves are down a steep hill. The cemetery is not fenced but it is mowed.

GPS Coordinates:  N36.576 W81.155 (estimated original location based on information from James Emmit Anders)

Surveyed by:  Jane Givens and Virginia Bond on 12 Apr 1971

Comments:  The graves of the Anders Family Cemetery were moved in September 1987 to a plot on the margin of the Brush Creek Baptist Church Cemetery prior to destruction of the cemetery during construction of a new bridge crossing New River. The highway engineer who inspected the site thought there were 24 or more graves.
