George Dudley Shelor

GEORGE DUDLEY SHELOR is clerk of the Circuit Court of Floyd County, was born in that county and is a member of a family that has been in this section of Virginia for several generations.

His grandfather, George Shelor, was a native of Floyd County, was a farmer, and died of the measles while a Confederate soldier. He married Jennie Lester, also a native of Floyd County. The father of the circuit clerk was George W. Shelor, who was born in Floyd County in 1861. His life was identified with farming, and as a young man he established the farm ten miles north of Floyd Courthouse where his son George Dudley was born April 30, 1890. His father died several months later, July 29, 1890. He was a republican in politics. His wife was Virginia Alice Eller, who was born in Floyd County in 1866, and now lives at Willis in that county.

George Dudley Shelor is the only child of his parents. He attended Roanoke College at Salem one year, and in 1909 graduated from the National Business College at Roanoke. After finishing his education he engaged in farming on his uncle’s place until 1.913, and then owned a farm of his own near Willis. he sold this property in 1917.

Mr. Shelor has had ten years of experience in the office of the circuit court clerk of Floyd County. He became deputy clerk in 1913, and in November, 1919, was elected clerk of the court, beginning his eighth year term January 1, 1920. His offices are in the Floyd Courthouse.

Mr. Shelor is a republican in politics. He was a member of the Town Council of Floyd from September 1, 1918, until he resigned to take up the duties of his present office. He is affiliated with Floyd Lodge No. 220, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons; Hylton Lodge No. 153, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, at Willis; Floyd Lodge No. 202, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and Floyd Camp, Modern Woodmen of America. He married at Welch, West Virginia, March 15, 1913, Miss Lura Ada Quessenberry, daughter of Henry and Emma (Carter) Quessenberry. Her father is a farmer and rural mail carrier near Willis in Floyd County and her mother is deceased. Mrs. Shelor finished her education in the State Normal College for Women at Farmville. Mr. and Mrs. Shelor have four children: Francis Benton, born May 28, 1914; George Dudley, Jr., born March 3, 1916; William Henry, born February 28, 1918; and James David, born March 7, 1921.
