This county was one of the original shires erected in 1634. It was originally called Charles River county, but the name was changed to York in 1642. It lies on the south side of the York river, a part of its northern boundary bing the Chesapeake Bay. James City, Warwick and Elizabeth City, are the counties bordering on the southwest. The lands are generally of a good quality, and produce average crops of corn, wheat, oats, tobacco, &c. The waters of York abound in fine oysters, and the trade of this article of consumption is very extensive.

Yorktown, the county seat, is to cated at the mouth of York river, and is famous in history as having een the closing scene of the struggle for the American Independence. The monument erected by the United States Government to commemorate the surrender of Cornwallis was completed in August, 1884, and is an imposing structure 97 feet in height with the crowning figure, a woman thirteen feet high, with arms extended, representing the goddess of peace. The faces of the base of the monument are adorned with the coats of arms of the United States and France, and devices representing the products of the United States and suitable patriotic inscriptions. Above the base and around the beginning of the cylindrical shafts are thirteen female figures typifying the 13 original colonies. The county has an area of 111 1/3 3 square miles (71,244 acres), and the lands have an average as. sessed value of $7.68 per acre.
