Washington lies in the southwest portion of the State, the Clinch mountain, which separate it from Russell, forming the norther and the Tennessee line the southern boundary, with Smyth and Grayson counties on the east, and Scott on the west. The county was formed in 1776 from Fincastle, and contains 602 square miles. It is watered by the three branches of the Holston river--North, Middle, and South forks--which afford a variety of excellent fresh water fish. The Norfolk & Western railroad extends through the middle part. The character of the ocunty is undulating, the soil fertile and productive, abounding in the spontaneous growth of blue grass and adapted to a high state of cultivation of clover and other grasses. Fruits of various kind-apples, pears, peaches, plums, grapes, &c--grow to perfection. Abundant crops of corn, wheat, rye, oats, tobacco, hemp, &c., are raised annually.
The raising of improved breeds of horses, cattle and sheep is extensively carried on in many parts of the county. Inexhaustible beds of gypsum (plaster) and salt are found on the north fork of the Holston, and have been profitably worked for many years.
Some of the finest mineral waters to be had anywhere are located in this county. There are valuable springs in the county, whose waters are sulphur, chalybeate and alum. This county is celebrated for the number and high order of its institutions of learning, in front rank of which stands the Southwest Virginia Institute for young ladies, situated at Glade Spring.
Abingdon, the county seat, is 189 miles west of Lynchburg, and 15 miles east of Bristol, Tennessee on the Norfolk and Western Railroad. Population 2,500. Its elevation above the level of the sea is 2,011 feet.
It is noted for its fine schools and colleges bracing and salubrious climate, besides being a place of considerable importance as a manufacturing, commercial and shipping centre. Large numbers of cattle, horses, mules and sheep are shiped annually from this point to the different markets and it is the largest tobacco manufacturing town west of Lynchburg.
Saltville, in this county, at the terminus of a nine mile branch of the Norfolk and Western railroad, is the site of the great salt works, which furnished the supply for the use of the Confederate States during the late war.
Goodson, on the Tennessee line, is a commercial town of considerable importance. The boundary line between Virginia and Tennessee divide Bristol from Goodson, but they are practically one town, and Bristol has, therefore, been inserted with Goodson in the county formation.
The average assessed value of the land is about $6.78 per acre.
