This county was formed from Russell and Wythe in 1799, and is one of the extreme southwestern counties, lying on the borders of West Virginia. The surface is very mountainous, and but comparatively a small portion is given to the raising of cereals, the principal of which are buckwheat, corn, oats and wheat. Like all lands in this section of the State, it is very productive in grasses, and the grazing of cattle comprises one of the principal sources of revenue to the inhabitants. Large deposits of coal, iron, manganese and other minerals are found in this county, which have long been underdeveloped on account of its remoteness from public highways. The New River division of the Norfolk and Western Railroad, which extends through the northern limits of the county, has given in recent years great impetus to the mining operations, especially of coal, in this section. There is a great variety of timber among which may be mentioned poplar, white oak, black and Spanish oak, black and white walnut, wild cherry, sugar tree, buckeye, chestnut, hickory.
The county is watered by the Clinch and Blue Stone rivers, which rise close to each other about 7 miles east of Jeffersonville, the county seat, the former flowing southwest and the latter northeast, both fed by living, never failing limstone springs. There is no county in the State whose water power of such excellence is so little used.
Tazewell C.H. (Jeffersonville) with population of 750, on the North Fork of the Clinch river, is a thriving place of considerable importance, 18« miles southwest of Graham, a station on the New River Division Norfolk and Western Railroad, with which point there is daily main communication, and is within less than a mile of the Clinch Valley Railroad now building. There is also telephone line from Courthouse to Graham. Tazewell has reguarly constructed water works the water being conducted from a large spring near the top of the mountain, the supply being sufficient for a population of 20,000. It is also well guarded in case of fire, there being many fire plugs in different parts of town. Graham has a population of 200 and is a rapidly growing town. Pocahontas, the terminus of the New River Railroad has sprung up in the past two years and is the location of one of the largest coal mines in the State, employing several hundred operators and large capital. The population is estmated at 5,000, and increasing rapidly. Tazewell county has an area of 525 1/3 square miles, 536,250 acres, and the land has an averaged assessed value of $3.81 per acre.
