This county was formed in 1786 from Washington, and lies between the dividing ridge -- Alleghany mountains on the north and Clinch mountain range on the south. Tazewell county is on the east and Scott and Wise on the west. The surface is generally mountainous, and the lands for the most part uncultivated. There are some very rich tracts in the valleys and along the rivers, which produce large and fine crops, far exceeding the average in most of the other counties of the State. The principal cereal productions are corn, wheat, oats, rye, buckwheat and tobacco. The raising of cattle and sheep of improved breed, is extensively carried on, and constitutes one of the principal industries of the inhabitants, many thousands being annually shipped to the markets of the North and Europe.

The Clinch river and its branches and Moccasin Creek, a branch of the Holston river, extend through and plentifully water the county. The nearest railroad point is Abingdon, in Washington county, on a branch of the Norfolk & Western railroad, six miles distant from its southeast corner. Iron ore (red and bron hematite) is found in various parts of the county, as is also the case with the manganese, lead, barite, and marble. Numerous coal deposits are found in the northern part. Lebanon, the county seat, has a population of 250, and occupies a central position, distant twenty-one miles from Abingdon in Washington on the N&W R.R. with which it has daily mail communication. The county area is 497 square miles, or 318,000 acres, and the average assessed vale of the land is $3.01 per acre.
