Orange County was formed from Spotsylvania in 1734, and derives its name from the color of its soil. The Rapid Ann river forms its northern boundary, separating it from Madison and Culpeper, with Louisa on the South, Spotsylvania county on the east and Greene on the west. The lands of Orange are based on a substratum of red clay, and are well adapted to the production of wheat, tobacca, corn and the artificial grasses. The raising of cattle and sheep is extensively carried on, and there is abundant water power on the Rapid Ann and North Anna Rivers. A vein of limestone passes through the county, which is used for agricultural and mechanical purposes. Gold and plumbago are also found, the former in that part of the county adjoining Spotsylvania. The other minerals are iron (brown and red hematite, magnetic), asbestos, marble, fire-clay. The timbes are hickory, oak, walnut, chestnut, and poplar. The Virginia Midland railroad traverses the county form the north to south, and the Potomac, Fredericksburg & Piedmont ( a narrow guage railroad) from Orange C.H. where it connects with the Virginia Midland to Fredericksburg in Spotsylvania county, connecting with the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac R. R. Orange C.H., the county seat, is eighty miles northwest from Richmond, and ninety-two miles southwest from Washington city. It contains a population of about 800. Gordonsville, with 1,000 population, is situated in the extreme southern portion of the county, at the junction of the Chesapeake and Ohio with the Virginia Midland Railroad, is a flourishing and fast-improving town. Montpelier, in this county, was the residence and the place of death and burial of James Madison, President of the United States from 1809 to 1817. Orange has an area of 333 1/3 square miles, or 213,326 acres and the land has an average assessed value of $9.19 per acre.
