Nottoway was formed 1788 from Amelia, and named from a trible of Indians by which it was once inhabited. Its mother county is on the north, Lunenburg and Brunswick on the south, Dinwiddie on the east, and Prince Edward on the west. The Nottoway River skirts its southern border, while the Little Nottoway and other tributaries of the Nottoway on the south, and many branches of the Appomattox on the north, extend into and water its different sections. The Norfolk and Western and the Richmond and Danville railroads intersect at Burkeville, furnishing facilities to market for the products of the county. Corn, oats, wheat, and tobacco are the principal crops, the annual yield of the latter--the quality of which is very fine--exceeding one and a half million pounds. Nottaway [sic] Court hosue is the county town, and has a population of 175, and is a station on the Norfolk and Western railroad. The minerals are soapstone and Kaolin, and the timbers are pine, oak, hickory, walnut, chestnut, poplar, cedar and ash. The county has an area of 306 3/4 square miles, or 196,360 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $4.05 per acre.
