Louisa was formed 1742 from Hanover, and is situated in a rapidly improving and fertile section of the State. The counties of Orange and Spotsylvania are on the north, Fluvanna and Goochland on the south, Albemarle on the west, and Hanover on the east. The North Anna river is on the north and the South Anna flows through and waters the southern part of the county. The Newport News and Mississippi Valley Railway traverses the middle part from east to west, bringing into convenient communication Richmond city, its principal market and connecting at Gordonsville in Orange, on the edge of this county, with all rail oine to the north and west. The lands in this county are well adapted to the raising of wheat, especially that part in the northeast known as the "Green Spring" section, which is though to have no superior in the State. Corn in paying quantity and some oats are raised. Considerable attention is paid to the cultivation of tobacco, of which two million pounds annually is raised. The minerals found are gold, silver, iron, copper, lead, mica and sand stone. The timers grown are pine, oak, walnut, maple and ash. Louisa C.H., the seat of Justice of the county is a station on the C. & O. Railway, 62 miles from Richmond. It has a population of 350, and does considerable business. The area of the county is 494 « square miles, 316,483 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $5.70 per acre.
