Lancaster county was first mentined in the Acts of Assembly with Gloucester and Surry, in 1652, and must have been formed in that year from Northumberland county. It lies on the north side of the Rappahannock, which separates it from Middlesex county on the south; a portion of the eastern part of the county is bounded by the Chesapeake bay, with Northumberland and Richmond counties on the north. The court-house is situated in the northern part of the county, and about eighty-three miles northeast of Richmond. The population has increased several hundred in the last two years, and is increasing rapidly. Many Marylanders and citizens of Gloucester county, Va., are making Lancaster their home, attracted by the oyster and fish industries. The lands produce fair average crops of corn, oats and wheat. The surface is rolling and well watered. Its contiguity to navigable waters renders transportation cheap. The area of the county is 128 square miles--77,957 acres--and the average assessed value of the lands is $8 per acre.
