This county was formed in 1701 from King and Queen. It lies between the Pamunkey and Mattapony rivers which unite at the southeast angle of the county and form the York river. The Courthouse lies twenty-seven miles northeast from Richmond and two miles from the Mattapony river.
The Principal town, West Point, whcih has a population of over 2,200, is located at the head of the York river and at ther termination of the Richmond, York River and Chesapeake railroad. There are several large lines of steamers from this point to New York Boston and Baltimore and a weekly line to the head of navigation on the Mattapony river. The water at the wharves is of sufficient depth to admit the largest class vessels. The lands in this county are generally good, and those on and neat the river very fertile. The area of the county is 256 1/3 square miles, or 164,647 acres, and the average assessed value of the land $6.60 per acre.
