This county was formed in 1838 from the western part of Orange and was named after Gen. Nathaniel Greene of the Revolution. It lies on the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge, which separates its from Rockingham and Page. Madison, Albemarle and Orange are on the north, south and east. Standardsville, the county seat, is in the western part of the county and contains about 350 inhabitants. Ruckersville is a small village in the southeastern part of the county. The lands are fertile, producing corn, oats, wheat, tobacco, and the artificial grasses, in great perfection. Fruits, such as apples, peaches, pears, cherries and smaller kinds grow finely and in great abundance. There are dense forests of oak and chestnut. The county is admirably adapted to raising stock and the growth of fine wool. There are several water courses in this county, tributaries of the Rapidan river, which afford ample power for mills &c. A remarkable cascade on the headwaters of the South river, which falls over a precipice of 160 feet is very grand and romantic. No works of internal improvement are in operation in this county. The Virginia Midland Railroad at Barboursville is within a short distance of the county line. The Rockingham turnpike (McAdamized) from Harrisonburg to Gordonsville passes directly through Standardsville and the entire county, and affords ample facilities to the farmers to get produce to market. Copper ore is found in the mountain sections, and small shafts, both horizontal and perpendicular, have been sunk, but with what success is not generally known. It has an area of 160 square miles (102,507 acres) and the average assessed value of its lands is $4.90 per acre.
