Goochland was formed from Henrico in 1727, and named in honor of one of Virginia's colonial Governors. Its southern border is skirted by the James river and traversed by the Richmond and Alleghany railroad, which follows the river's course. It is plentifully watered by the lames and its tributaries on the south and branches of the South Anna on the north. The counties bounding it are Louisa and Hanover on the north, Cumberland and Powhatan on the south, Henrico on the east, and Fluvanna on the west. The farm products are considerable, tobacco of the Orinoco variety being the principal crop. The dairy and orchard yield little or no revenue though such as is raised is of very superior quality. The minerals of this county are gold copper, coal, plumbago, mica, and asbestos. The timbers are pine, oak hickory, poplar and ash, Goochland Courthouse, the county seat, is one mile north of Maiden's Adventure Depot, Richmond and Alleghany railroad, thirty miles west of Richmond, and has a population of about fifty. The county has an area of 281 1/2 square miles-180,183 acres-and the land has an average assessed value of $7.50 per acre.
