Gloucester was formed from York in 1652, and is one of the peninsula counties whose shores are washed by the waters of the Chesapeake. It was named after Gloucestershire, in England, from which place most of the earliest settlers of the county came. The York river is on its south and west, separating it from York and James City counties, and Piankitank on its north, separating it from Middlesex.

Matthews is on the upper or northern part of its eastern border, Mob Jack bay at its middle and Chesapeake bay at its southern part. King and Queen county bounds it on the west. The farm products, though small, are more than sufcient for home use, while those of the dairy and orchard yield good profits. Marl in great abundance is found in this county. The fisheries of Gloucester are valuable and extensive, employing large capital and many hands. The Mob Jack bay oyster is thought by many to equal in quality and flavor those of the world-renowned Lynn. haven bay. This county is noted as having been the place of death and burial of Nathaniel Bacon, leader of the rebellion against the domestic maladministration of Governor Sir William Berkely in 1676. It is also claimed by Capt. Smith himself and Stith, another historian, to have been in this county, on the York, that Pocahontas caved the life of Smith.

Gloucester Court-House, the county seat, is on the Ware river. and has a population of 75. West Point, on the York river, the eastern terminus of the York River division Richmond and Danville Railroad, sixteen miles distant, is the nearest railroad point, There is daily mail communication. The area of the county is 207 1/2 square miles, or 132,916 acres, and the average assessed value is $7.74 per acre.
