This county was formed from (Old), Rappahannock in 1692. It lies on the south-side of the Rappahannock river, about forty miles northeast from Richmond. The county seat Tappahannock, is a port of entry, and contains about 600 inhabitants. The surface of the county is slightly hilly and its soil, except on the margin of the streams, generally sandy. It pro. duces good crops of corn, wheat and oats, while polates and other vegetables are cultivated, and with the dairy products, are sources of much revenue. There is connection with Baltimore by steamers three times a week, Fredericksburg four times and Norfolk twice a week, and is very ac cessible to all the markets.

The shad and herring fisheries of this countv are valuable, many men and vessels being employed in them. The cattle raised here is very fine, the greater part being shipped to Baltimore. The county has an area of 252 2/3 square miles, 161,684 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $5.21 per acre.
