This county was formed in 1880 from the counties of Wise, Buchanan and Russell, and named in honor of Wm. J. Dickenson. It is bounded on the north by Kentucky, on the east by Buchanan county, on the south by Russell county, on the west by Wise County. The production of this county are corn, rye, oats, wheat and some tobacco. A very large portion of the land is in timber, and some of the finest grown in the State is from this county. There is also an abundance of coal and iron besides several mineral springs. The county has an area of 606 square miles, 387,938 acres, and the land has an average assesed value of $0.27 per acre. It is one of the finest counties for grass and grazing purposes in the State.
