Craig County was erected in 1851 from Botetourt and Roanoke, and borders on the State of West Virginia, from which it is separated by the Alleghany Mountains. Alleghany bounds it on the north, Roanoke, Montgomery and Giles on the south, and Botetourt on the east. The corn and other crops, except grass, are small--not more than sufficient for home use being raised. It has, however, a high reputation for the raising of stock of fine quality. The minerals are iron, manganese, and slate. The timbers are oak, hickory, ash and poplar. The county is watered by the Potts, John's, Sinking, and Craig creeks. New Castle, the county seat, on Craig's Creek, at the foot of North mountain, is the most important town in the county. Its population is 182. There is a daily mail between here and Salem on the Norfolk and Western road, twenty three miles distant. The area is 404« square miles, of 258,727 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $2.18 per acre.
