Doctor Baughman attended the public schools of Rural Retreat, and was graduated from the high school course in 1913. He then entered the medical department of the University of Tennessee, and was graduated therefrom in 1917, with the degree of Doctor of Medicine and as a member of Alpha Kappa Kappa, the Greek letter medical fraternity. From then on until his enlistment he was interne in the Memphis General Hospital. On May 28, 1918, he enlisted in the Medical Corps, and was sent to Camp Meade, where he was commissioned a first lieutenant, and remained there until July 10, 1918, when he went overseas with the Three Hundred and Fourteenth Field Hospital, Seventy-ninth Division, arriving at Brest, France, July 21, 1918. Doctor Baughman participated in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, and was at the front in France during the greater portion of the time until November 11, 1918, for two months of that time being stationed at Verdun. He remained in France until July 3, 1919, when he was sent back to this country, and was honorably discharged with the rank of captain, having been promoted February 25, 1919. While at Montfancon, in the Meuse-Argonne offensive, he was gassed. Returning home Doctor Baughman located at Marion soon thereafter, and has since been engaged in a general medical and surgical practice, with offices in the Bank of Marion Building, Main Street. He is a democrat. The Marion Lutheran Church holds his membership. A Mason, be belongs to Mount Airy Lodge No. 226, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, of Rural Retreat; Marion Chapter No. 54, Royal Arch Masons; Lynn Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar; Kazim Temple, Ancient Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Roanoke, Virginia. He also is a member of Pulaski Lodge No. 1067, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, of Pulaski, Virginia; the Marion Kiwanis Club; the Medical Society of Virginia; the Smyth County Medical Society; the Southwest Virginia Medical Society; and the American Medical Association. Doctor Baughman is not married.
