Bath was organized in 1790 from parts of Augusta, Botetourt, and Greenbrier It contains 619,040 acres, which have an average assessed value of $1.37 per acre. This county is thickly studded with numerous mountain ranges, which furnish excellent pasturage for the horses, cattle and sheep that are annually raised here. The valley lands, though small in area, are quite rich, and produce good crops of corn, oats and wheat. The dairy and orchard products are more than sufficient for the need of the people. In point of population Bath is one of the smallest counties in the State, Warwick and Craig only being smaller. The Alleghany mountains bound Bath on the west, dividing it from the State of West Virginia. Mill and Walker's mountains on the east separate it from Rockbridge and Augusta, while the counties of Highland and Alleghany bound it on the north and south. The Warm Springs mountains divide the county into two nearly equal parts, the eastern of which is drained and watered by the headwaters of the Cow Pasture nitti the western by the headwaters of the Jackson river. The Newport News and Mississippi Valley railway enters the county of Panther Gap, and extends through It fifteen miles, going out over the Cow Pasture river at the extreme southeastern limit: The climate is dry, healthy and invigorating, and the scenery unsurpassed in the mountains of Virginia. Iron ore, of different variety and in large quantities, is found here.
Bath, more than any other county in Virginia, is celebrated for its mineral springs, the remedial and restorative properties of which have so often been tried to good effect, after the resources of medical science have been exhausted in vain. Of these health-giving fountains the Warm Sulphur Springs were the first known to the white man. Soon after their discovery they became celebrated for their curative virtues, and even ninety years ago they were resorted to by many visitors at much labor and fatigue. They are five miles from the Hot, eight from the Healing, five from the Bath Alum, and only a few hours' ride from the famous Green brier White Sulphur, the Sweet, the Sweet Chalybeate and the Rock bridge Alum Springs.
Warm Springs is the county seal and has a population of about thre hundred. It is delightfully situate in the richest and most fertile part of the Warm Springs Valley. The little village of Germantown, one quarter of a mile below, nestled tween the mountains, affords visitor much pleasure. Blowing Cave, in this county, is one of the great natu rat curiosities of the State. It is of the road between the Warm any Millboro' Springs, and near the latter.
