Augusta was formed from Orange, in 1738 and is next to Rockingham, the largest county in the state, having 1,033 square miles, or 666,163 acres. Rockingham county bounds it on the north, the Blue Ridge Mountains on the east, dividing it from Albemarle and Nelson, Rockbridge on the south and the Shenandoah Mountains on its western border, dividing it from Bath and Highland counties and the State of West Virginia. It is at the head of the Shenandoah Valley at its widest part. The North, South and Middle rivers, which form the Shenandoah, water and have their rise in this county. The lands (which have an average assessed value of $13.04 per acre) are immensely rich and productive, and yield large crops of wheat, corn, oats, rye and the grasses. Augusta, in 1880, was the first county in the State in the production of wheat and the Hay crop, raising 522,341 bushels of wheat and 23,931 tons of hay. In the number of horses it ranked first; milch cows third; in butter making and value of farm products second.

The numerous mountain ranges in the eastern and western parts of the county afford excellent pasturage for horses and cattle and stock of all kinds. Agusta is noted for the large number and superior excellence of its flouring mills, having a larger number and employing more capital than any other county in the State except Henrico, in which the extensive mills of Richmond city are located. There are several distilleries with large capital engaged in the manufacture of very superior whiskey. The timbers found in this county are chestnut, walnut, oak,pine, ash and poplar. The minerals are iron, manganese, marble, slate, coal, kaolin, ocre and limestone. There are many valuable mineral springs, which have acquired celebrity because of their medicinal properties that are visited annually by large numbers, residents of other States as well as of Virginia. The Cyclopean Towers and Madison Cave, near Mount Solon, and Weyers Cave, sixteen miles northeast of Staunton, are among the greatest curiosities of the State. Staunton, the county seat of Augusta, is on the Chesapeake and Ohio and Valley Branch of B & O railways, at an altitude of 1,500 feet above the level of and 175 miles distant from the sea. It was incorporated in 1871, is the principal city in the Valley of the Shenandoah, and is the point of population the eighth city
of Virginia. The climate of Staunton is delightfully salubrious and healthful - its high mountain ranges protecting it from the severe storms that sweep the Atlantic coast on the east and the Mississippi Valley on the west. The Western Lunatic Asylum and the Virginia Institution for the Education of the Deaf, Dumb and Blind are points of interest and worthy objects of the support extended by the State and the pride felt in them by her people. They are imposing and magnificient structures, surrounded by beautifully improved grounds, where the inmates find recreation and enjoyment. In respect to the educational advantages offered by
the Female Colleges, we simply call attention to the advertisement of each, in which not alone the
school, but the city as well is fully and beautifully described. Staunton bids fair to become very soon the center of large iron manufacturing interests, there being already operated here several machine shops and agricultural implement manufacturing establishments. There are several other manufactories of different kinds besides a large number of first-class mercantile concerns which do a safe and profitable business. The hotel
accommodations are excellent and ample, the Virginia Hotel being one of the best in the Valley.
