This county was formed in 1845 from parts of Buckingham, Charlotte, Campbell and Prince Edward, and has an area of 328 square miles, 201,280 acres. It lies on the south side of James river, and is bounded on the east of Buckingham county, south of Campbell, Charlotte, and Prince Edward, west by Campbell, north by Buckingham, nelson, and Amherst, from which it is separated by James River. The lands are naturally of a fine productive quality, yielding fine crops of tobacco, wheat, corn &c. The minerals are gold, iron, copper, manganese and asbestos. It is traversed by the Norfolk and Western railroad, which extends through the country from east to west, while its northern boundary is skirted by the Richmond and Alleghany railroad. The county seat (Appomattox C.H.) Has become famous in history as being the near the scene of the last struggle of the Southern Confederacy for its independence. This region abounds in large mineral deposits, chief of which iron, is found in large quantities in all the northern part of the county. Average assessed value of lands $4.25 per acre.
