Alexandria county, in 1801, at the time it was ceded to the General Government, was a part of Fairfax county. After its retrocession in 1847, it was made a separate county and named after its principal city. The lands are generally of good quality, and where cultivated readily produce good crops. Some corn, wheat, oats, and rye is raised, but the people pay more attention to the cultivation of irish and sweet potatoes and the fruits and dairy products which find ready sale in the Washington markets. The county is bounded on the north, west and south by Fairfax county, and on the east by the Potomac river.

The Alexandria canal runs through the county from north to south, connecting at Georgetown with the Cheasapeake and Ohio canal for Haper's Ferry and Cumberland. The Virginia Midland, Alexandria and Washington City, Alexandria and Fredericksburg and the Washington, Ohio and Western railroads furnish means of transportation to all points. The area is the smallest in the State, being but 28 2/3 square miles (18,187 acres). The average assessed value of the land is $43.79 per acre.

Arlington the former home of the Custis and Lee's in this county opposite Georgetown was confiscated by the Federal Government during the late war, and a portion of it was used as one of the places of burial for those who fell in those fierce and sanguine contests. Nineteen years after the termination of the war, Congress passes a bill to pay Gen. G. W. C. Lee for the property. The portion not taken up by the graves has been given to the negroes, and they have established what is called the Freedmen's village. Hunting Creek, forming the Southern boundary of the city of Alexandria, is a beautiful sheet of water, and has a depth of fifteen or twenty feet. It is a safe harbor for the vessels while waiting to be taken on the ways of the extensive ship building company recently established at Alexandria or which cannot find good or safe anchorage at Washington.
