Sidney Coulling Post 133 - American Legion
North Tazewell, Virginia

Sidney Coulling Post was organized February 15, 1922. The Post owes its existence to Major Jack W. Witten, as it was through his efforts that it was organized. Major Witten served as Post commander until January 4, 1924, when it became necessary for him to give up this office to serve in the Legislature. Garland Peery was then elected commander. W. W. Beavers was elected adjutant, and is still filling this office efficiently.

At the beginning there were forty members on roll, while now this number has been increased to one hundred and eighteen. During the week beginning May 19th the Post put on a drive for new members, and at the end of the week a banquet was given for old and new members, which was a most enjoyable occasion.

Memorial Day has always been observed with appropriate ceremonies, and this year David P. Harris Post of Richlands joined the local Post in making the day one to be remembered.

In June the Post sponsored a musical show given by local talen, which was a success in every way. A skating rink and billiard room have been operated by the Post, and its home is equipped with a canteen. The Post is not used exclusively by the Legion, but is used also by the ladies of the community for church suppers, basketball games, etc. This spring a grandstand was built at the athletic grounds used by the High School and the local ball teams. The Post bore most of the expense of this building.

At present the Sidney Coulling Post has its home in rented quarters, but the object toward which all are working is a home owned by the Post 1924 officers-Garland Peery, commander; W. W. Beavers, adjutant; J. V. Johnson, finance officer; A. P. McKenry, first vice-commander; Herbert Ward, second vice-commander; H. T. Haley, third vice-commander; Jas. A. Moore, sergeant-at-arms; W. W. Arrowood, chaplain; L. R. Coulling, athletic officer; J. W. Witten. service officer. Executive committee: J. W. Witten, C. W. Moore, C. C. Peery, J. W. Jones.
