INTRODUCTION
As most of you know, the
bulk of the 1890 Federal Census burned many years ago. The only
surviving portion of this schedule which survived was an
enumeration of Union Soldiers and their widows - that is soldiers
who served in the forces of the United States during the American
Civil War. This record is important for another reason - it gives a
clear sense of the political loyalties of the men listed in this
record. It also does something else - it measures Unionist
sentiment in the Southwest Virginia Counties. The citizens of these
counties have been maligned by many Civil War Historians as being
disloyal to the Southern cause. This transcript does much to refute
this allegation, especially in light of the proximity to Union
territory in Eastern Kentucky, Southern West Virginia, and though
not Union territory in the sense the previous two examples were,
East Tennessee which was heavily pro-Union.
