in the County's early days and was Captain of the 2nd Battalion when the county was formed in 1793.
James and Patsy's other children were: Orville Anderson, b. 1813 d. 1850 who served as Clerk of Court
when the county seat moved to Independence, Evalina b. 1826 d. 1855 who Md. Fielden Hale on
10/15/1840, Elizabeth b. 1827, Emily b. 1833, Martha J. b. 1838, Robert E. b. 1840 and Rush b. 1841.

of the family were buried in the Atkins Cemetery at Providence. Lucy Byrd was b. 8/3/1812, d/o Barnett
Byrd and Ludia Swinney. Ambrose Atkins was s/o James Atkins and his 2nd wife Mary Hale. The Stones
above were children of Amanda Jane Atkins and James Stone. James Stone served in Co. I, 37th VA
Cavalry Battalion CSA and was wounded in action and may have died from those wounds, but was still
living on 10/31/1864.]

and is buried at Smithfield, VA. Martin Atkins served in Co. C, 63rd VA Infantry, CSA, as did Kennerly
Atkins. Daniel Atkins b. 8/22/1799 d. 11/20/1882, Elizabeth died on 3/6/1864 of smallpox.]

Catherine Cox. John Blevins, Sr. came to America with the British Army during the American Revolution
and relinquished his British citizenship and in so doing lost his title to real estate in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Samuel, above, sought to reclaim the estate and was denied any right to it. Other children were
Alexander b. ca. 1847, Emily b. ca. 1843, Adeline b. ca. 1837 and Nancy. Alexander served in Co. C, 45th
VA Infantry, CSA, enlisting on 3/20/1864 in Smyth Co., was taken prisoner of war at Piedmont on
6/5/1864, sent to Camp Morton, Indiana were he died on 9/23/1864, and was buried in grave #1129 in the
Greenlawn Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.]
