New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

ARTICLES OF FAITH

  1. We believe in only one true and living God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, and these three are One.
  2. We believe that the scriptures of the Old and New Testament are the Word of God, and the only rule of Faith and Practice.
  3. We believe in the doctrine of Election by Grace.
  4. We believe in the doctrine of Original Sin, and in man's impotency to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature, by his own free will and ability.
  5. We believe that sinners are called, converted, regenerated and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, and that all who are thus regenerated and are born again by the spirit of God, shall never finally fall away.
  6. We believe that sinners are justified in the sight of God, only by the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ.
  7. We believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ, and that true believers are the only subjects of these. ordinances, and we believe the only true mode of Baptism is by immersion.
  8. We believe in the Resurrection of the dead and in a general judgment and that the joys of the righteous and the punishment of the wicked will be eternal.
  9. We believe that no minister has a right to administer the ordinance of the Gospel, except such as the regularly called, and come under the imposition of hands by the presbytery.

3. Baptist Chapel

Baptist Chapel Church, located on Big Helton Creek, Ashe County, North Carolina was organized in 1842 by Elder Richard Jacks, and was a member of the Jefferson Baptist Association from 1848 until 1870; and a member of the New River Missionary Baptist Association from 1870 until 1875. This church joined the Mountain Union Baptist Association in 1876 by letter. Rev. J. F. Fletcher noted in his History of the Ashe and New River Baptist Associations that Baptist Chapel had returned to the Missionary Baptist fold. However, Baptist Chapel continued to represent in the Mountain Union Association. In 1923, Baptist Chapel gave up 39 members who established Little Helton Baptist Church. This congregation joined the Ashe Missionary Baptist Association. Baptist Chapel Church became part of the Original Mountain Union Baptist Association in the 1961 division, but it withdrew to become an independent church about 1994.

Baptist Union Church of Attoway, Smyth County, Virginia, was admitted to the Mountain Union Baptist Association in 1912. It had been part of the Holston Valley Association of Regular Baptists. This church dropped out of the Mountain Union Baptist Association after the 1946 session, but the reason is unknown. 5. Baptist View

Baptist View Baptist Church, located at Sharon, north of Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, was admitted to the Mountain Union Baptist Association as a new church in 1931. The Baptist View Church divided in 1954, with both sides presenting letters and delegates to the 1954 Associational session. The Association attempted to appointed nine men to investigate and report to the association, but the body was divided and the motion was withdrawn. Finally a body of three was appointed to investigate at the Friday session and were to report the following day. It was determined that a faction led by Elder Dewey Rhodes had departed from "the Orthodox teaching of the work of God, and the rules of the Associaiton and from the principles of a regular Baptist Church and has the others locked out of the church house.. Therefore, we declare the ones led by Elder Archie Pruett as moderator the original and true Baptist View Church...." The association asked the law to intervene and to issue a restraining order against the Dewey Rhodes faction.

It is a member of the Mountain Union Baptist Association.

29. Liberty

Liberty Regular Baptist Church is located on Silas Creek in central Ashe County, North Carolina. It was apparently organized sometime time between 1877 and 1879. In 1931 the Association did not seat the delegates from Liberty Church because the church had admitted Elder Luther Testerman to membership, despite the fact that he had been excluded from Pine Grove Church. The Association appointed a committee to investigate. In 1932, the association reported that Pine Grove church had acted properly in excluding Luther Testerman. Liberty Church rescinded the act of accepting him into their fellowship. As a result, their letter and delegates to the 1932 Mountain Union Baptist Association were accepted.

Liberty Church withdrew from the Mountain Union Baptist Association about 1990 and became an independent church. This separation was not over doctrinal or practical issues.

60. Rock Creek

Rock Creek Regular Baptist Church was admitted to the Mountain Union Baptist Association in 1897 as a newly constituted church. This congregation was located in Ashe County, North Carolina. In 1938, there was a controversy concerning this church, and their pastor, Elder S. S. Graybeal was declared in disorder, and the Mountain Union Churches were advised to close their doors to him. Tradition holds that the controversy was over the use of Sunday School literature and a desire by Rock Creek Church to use more modern hymnals. Rock Creek Church did not represented in this or subsequent sessions of the Mountain Union Baptist Association. It subsequently became a member of the Ashe Missionary Baptist Association.

This church was located on Forge Creek in Johnson County, Tennessee. It was admitted to the Mountain Union Baptist Association in 1888 as a newly organized church. This church was dropped from the associational list in 1906 for no stated reason. In 1917 it reapplied for membership and was accepted, but the membership was less than half of what it had been in 1906. The 1929 minutes note: "The Brethern that were appointed to visit Walnut Grove church to see if it could be built up again reported that they had got information that conditions were such in the locality where Walnut Grove church was organized that it would not be advisable to try to rebuild the church and for that reason they did not make any effort to do so. The report was accepted and the church dropped from the roll."

75. Zion Hill

Zion Hill Church was formed in 1868 by members excommunicated from the Big Helton Primitive Baptist Church in the "Mountain Union division." It is located in the Sturgill's Community in Northern Ashe County, North Carolina. This church divided in 1910 during the Macedonia division, with part adhearing to the Macedonia Baptist Association (the larger faction) and a smaller faction led by Clayborn Monroe Weaver staying with the Mountain Union Baptist Association. This faction ceased holding meetings in 1935. The church's pastor, Elder M. C. Powers merited this resolution in the 1936 Associational minutes: "Whereas Elder M. C. Powers has been the cause of confusion and discord between Liberty and Baptist View Churches, we the Messengers from Baptist View and Liberty Churches have settled the same between us and advise the churches not to use him in their pulpits until he sets himself in order"
