New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

We're not finished. A site like this can't just freeze in time. It must be maintained, .... Read More

New River Notes

January 6, 2013

New River Notes, a leading genealogy resource for the New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia, launched its new look website today.

new river valley mapNew River Notes was originally launched in 1998 by Jeffrey C. Weaver providing New River Valley researchers with a new wealth of information and that tradition is continued today by the Grayson County, Virginia Heritage Foundation, Inc.

Welcome and we hope you enjoy our new look. For more information on the changes and plans see posts on the GCVHF Google+ Page.

Upper New River Valley Ethnicity

by Jeff Weaver

[Note: This report is a part of an unfinished project by Jeff Weaver. The information is incomplete and may contain errors. We invite anyone to study this topic in more detail and provide a more complete analysis of the ethnicity of the early settlers of this region.]

Who they were has continued to be a source of controversy and discussion. The following chart gives information for these settlers as far as is known. This chart is based on the family names present in the Upper New River Valley in 1850, by which time all in-migration had virtually ended. You will note that many of the family names listed are no longer present in the Upper New River Valley. Out migration did not end, and continues to this day. As a result, the gene pool for the Upper New River Valley has been limited, and nearly every one in the region is related, though it may be distantly, to everyone else. This fact has given rise to some unusual problems, which will be discussed more fully in the section on living and dying. The origins of the Upper New River Families are presented in the following table. The known American origins of 187 of these 615 families is presented in the summary table below: (Subject to revision as more information is gathered.)

American Origions of Families
REGION STATE # FAMILIES % from Region % from State
Canada Nova Scotia 1 0.50% 0.50%
New England Massachusetts 6   3.20%
New England Connecticut 2   1.10%
New England New York 6   3.20%
New England     7.50%
Mid-Atlantic Pennsylvania 32   17.10%
Mid-Atlantic Maryland 16   8.60%
Mid-Atlantic New Jersey 9   4.80%
Mid-Atlantic Delaware 4   2.10%
Mid-Atlantic     32.60%
The South Virginia 77   41.20%
The South North Carolina 30   16.00%
The South South Carolina 2   1.10%
The South Tennessee 2   1.10%
The South     59.40%
Total   187   100%

Direct immigrants from foreign countries are included in the above totals, usually with either Virginia or North Carolina, which may slightly inflate their totals, as they truly had no American origins. Ethnic groups also found in the following table have been summarized below. Note some ethnic origins are known whether or not their American origins are known:

Direct Immigrant Families

British Isles Wales 8 4.00%
British Isles Ireland 13 6.50%

Others France 12 6.00%
Others Switzerland 3 1.50%
Others Africa 3 1.50%
Others Netherlands 4 2.00%
Total   204 100.00%

The following chart lists the family names found in the Upper New River Valley in 1850 and various known data about them. If a category is blank, the answer to that question is unknown to the author and others reviewing this work. A total of 421 family names were found on the 1850 Ashe County Census. A total of 356 families names were found on the 1850 Grayson County Census. Of 614 family names, 162 (26%) family surnames were found in both counties. It should be noted that not all people sharing a common surname are necessarily related, however, many of the families which "do not claim kin" are in fact, all connected at some distant historical point. The free African-Americans in 1850 were also in some cases related to the Europeans of similar names due to circumstances which are discussed in the section on the black residents of the Upper New River Valley.
