New River Notes — Complete

January 21, 2014

After about two years of work we have completed a major upgrade to New River Notes. On January 21, 2014 we switched in the last of the updated files and final page revisions.

In January 2013 we introduced the new site layout but because there were many pages left to do there was a big red Under Construction on the front page. A year later we've finished all of the pages that were on the original site. Construction is complete. We have a great looking site full of material to help you in your research and possibly entertain you.

New River Notes, a leading genealogy resource for the New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia, launched its new look website today.

new river valley mapNew River Notes was originally launched in 1998 by Jeffrey C. Weaver providing New River Valley researchers with a new wealth of information and that tradition is continued today by the Grayson County, Virginia Heritage Foundation, Inc.

Alvarado - Confluence of the South and Middle Forks of Holsyon289 viewsCONFLUENCE OF THE MIDDLE AND SOUTH FORKS OF THE HOLSTON RIVER NEAR ALVARADO, VIRGINIA. THE MIDDLE FORK IS IN THE FOREGROUND WITH THE SOUTH FORK COMING IN FROM THE TOP OF THE PICTURE. THIS IS AT THE HEADWATERS OF SOUTH HOLSTON LAKE. THE PICTURE WAS TAKEN FROM THE CREEPER TRAIL WHICH CROSSES THE RIVER ON THE OLD VIRGINIA CREEPER RAILROAD TRESTLE. AS YOU CAN SEE, THE WATER LEVELS ARE QUITE LOW. Alvarado - Railroad Trestle314 viewsA RAILROAD FROM ABINGDON, VA. LINKING SEVERAL SMALL TOWNS AND COMMUNITIES WAS STARTED IN THE 1880s. BY 1918 IT RAN FROM ABINGDON TO ELKLAND, N. C. WHICH IS NOW CALLED TODD. DAMASCUS, TAYLOR'S VALLEY, GREEN COVE AND WHITE TOP WERE AMONG THE STOPS ON IT'S ROUTE. THERE WERE 100 TRESTLES AND BRIDGES ON THE RAIL LINE.

THE VIRGINIA CREEPER WAS STEAM POWERED AND HAULED FREIGHT AND PASSENGERS. THE STEAM ENGINE WAS REPLACED BY N&W IN 1956 WITH A DIESEL LOCOMOTIVE. IT CONTINUED IN OPERATION UNTIL MARCH 31, 1977 WHEN THE LAST TRAIN RAN. THE ROADBED HAS BEEN CONVERTED TO A VERY POPULAR HIKING-BIKING TRAIL. PICTURED IS THE TRESTLE AT THE HEADWATERS OF SOUTH HOLSTON LAKE WHERE THE MIDDLE AND SOUTH FORKS OFTHE HOLSTON RIVER MEET. Courtesy of Don Smith dsmith1043@comcast.net
