EDITH MAY WOODRUFF

She was married to Alex A. Woodruff, who preceded her in death, March 17, 1941. To this union were born five children: Pearl, Ruby, Sadie, Nannie and Herbert.
In 1908 she joined the Primitive Baptist Church at Little River and was baptized into the faith by Elder Smith Webb. She lived a consistent and faithful member until death. Being a cripple, she was unable to attend her Church as she would have wished.
Edith Woodruff's life was truly so unselfish and so devoted to the service of others as to be outstandingly inspirational and beautiful. She loved people and expressed that love in both word and deed. She brought her children up in the fear and love of the Lord and no sacrifice was too great if she were called upon to make it.
In 1920 she suffered a broken hip and leg injury which left her a cripple. Since the death of her husband, she has been an invalid. Much of the time a shut in. Though suffering so much and almost constantly, she bore her afflictions with patience, and was always spreading sunshine and cheer to all with whom she came in contact.
On May 4,1950, Edith Woodruff's beautiful spirit returned to the God who gave it. Surviving are the five children: Pearl and Ruby Woodruff, Mrs. Sadie Hash, Mrs. Nancy McCann, Herbert Woodruff, a foster daughter Agnes Wolfe. He was married to Allie Irwin Dec. 26,1891. Unto this union was born 11 children, seven sons and four daughters, two of whom preceded him in death. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He professed a hope in Christ and united with the Church at Prathers Creek in l888 and remained a member until death.
He bore his sickness with great patience, and called his family to his bedside and told them that he was ready to go, and there was nothing in his way. He was a kind and loving father to his children. He said the Lord only knew how much he had prayed for them. He rejoiced in his home many times while talking to his family.
This is his favorite verse that he read over and over for many years:
Oh death, oh death, happy thought of me,
That I must come and go with thee;
Oh death, oh death, happy thought of me,
I am prepared for e-ter-ni-ty.
Yes I have come to get your soul,
To leave your body and leave it cold;
To drop the flesh off froom the frame,
The earth and worms, both have their claim.
Oh, how could I think of father,
Without a tear or sigh,
I cannot find another
Between the earth and sky,
That ever will be like him.
Though he has gone from me,
I hope that I will meet him
In that eternity.
He lived on earth so many years
His locks were old and gray,
His heart was peirced with sorrows,
But now they're gone away;
But while my body is sleeping,
My soul will be at rest,
So children don't be weeping,
While I'm among the blest.
Dear children, may you meet me,
In that bright world above,
We'll surround the throne of God
And sing redeeming love.

The last time he visited my home, we were reading and talking about the Heavenly things and he seemed to enjoy that better than talking about worldly things.
He was an humble character. He would kneel with me to pray and I believe God will hear and answer prayer, and by the Grace of God I will see him again.

Often we think of you dear mother,

If we could hear your voice again,
But the pain of death has passed,
Labor and sorrow are no more,

I cannot say, and I will not say,
That she is dead, she is just away
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand
She wandered into an unknown land.
She has wandered into an unknown land,
And left us dreaming how very fair
It must be, since she lingers there-
And you, oh you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and glad return
Think of her fairing on as dear
In the love of there, as the love of here.
Mild and gentle as she was brave
When the sweetest love of her life she gave
To the simple things where the violets grew,
Pure as the eyes they were likened to;
The touches of her hand have strayed
As reverently as her lips have prayed;
Think of her still as the same I say,
She is not dead, she is just away.

Weep not children, our life is passed,
Your love was dear until the last;
Weep not for us, but pity take
And love each other for our sake;
Death breaks the ties of strongest love,
Fills many hearts with grief and pain,
But those that meet in Heaven above
Will never, never part again.

A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is still,
A place is vacant in our home,
That never can be filled.
It is but the casket beneath the sod,
We know your spirit lives.
It is a part of God's great plan,
To take back what he gives.
