NOTES FROM SEVERAL SOURCES LISTED BELOW.
1. Source of notes Alexander Co.NC Historical Book, Alexander Co. Library:
This John Gwaltney and his sons Robert , William and Nathan came into NC. They settled on Rowans or
Rowes Mountain which is now Alexander Co.NC. John served as private in the NC Continental Army
during the American Revolution for 84 months for which he received 64 acres of land for his services. By,
1790, he moved and settled along Rocky Creek on Jolly's Mountain in Iredell Co.NC. He served on the
Iredell County Jury in 1789. All of his sons served as soldiers during the War of 1812. On Oct. 9, 1793 he
purchased 474 acres of land along the north side of Rocky Creek. He died at his home five miles south of
Brushy Mountains in Iredell Co.NC. Most of his descendants used the Gaultney spelling of the surname.
John Gwaltney was one of the first of this pioneer family to move from Tidewater Virginia into Western
North Carolina. He left many early tracks in WNC counties of Rowan, Davie, Wilkes, Rutherford,
Davidson, Iredell and Alexander Co. We do know by land entry that John Gaultney was in Rowan Co.NC
by 1778. Various publications state that John settled on what was known as Rowes Mountain, thought to
be about 5 miles south of Brushy Mountain in Iredell County before the Revolutionary War. [There is a
rough native stone grave marker in Hopewell Cemetery north of Hiddenite,NC in Alexander Co. with a JG
cut in it -date 1743 and 18__.] [NOTE that Marvin McClain entered]
Note from Carolyn Laws:
On January 15, 2000, I and my sister Lois G. Hughes visited Alexander Co.NC to check cemeteries and to
visit the old home site of the Gwaltney's. We left Lenoir, where Lois now lives and went to Taylorsville,
NC which is in Alexander Co.NC. We wanted to go to the Alexander Genealogical Building but it was
closed and the library was also closed for Martin L. King Holiday. We asked question as how to get to "
the old Gwaltney farm " . We was sent to Millersville,NC where we located "Gwaltney Farm Lane", there
we found some of Don Gwaltney's descendants which were very nice and told us some about the farm.
They inherited the farm from a lady named Vinny who had lived with them. The Don Gwaltney is
deceased but family still lives there. Don did thrashing and farmed for a living. We saw 2 old tobacco
barns , made of logs and dobbed with mud.
From there we went to East Taylorsville Church and visited the Taylorsville Cemetery where we recorded
what Gwaltney's were buried there. The Taylorsville Cemetery is located on Highway 90.
We went to Linney's Grove, [where there is an old mill still in use called Linney's Mill} and visited the
Linney's Grove Cemetery which was beside of Linney's Grove Church. There we found a Efird Durant
Gwaltney buried, we had earlier spoke with his wife Durcilla Sweet Gwaltney at her home in Hiddinite,NC
where she lived on Gwaltney Rd.
From there we went to Sulfur Springs Rd. and turned on to Hopewell Church Rd. where we located Shady
Grove Church [off the road on a chicken farm, which had a very old 2 story log house still standing. We
saw no one to ask questions of.]
We visited the Shady Grove Cemetery where we located some Gwaltney graves and recorded them.
We got back on the Hopewell Church Rd to try and locate the Hopewell Cemetery. We found the Fairview
Baptist Church where a Jerry Gwaltney was pastor. There we found more Gwaltney graves and recorded
them. Two people working there told us how to get to Hopewell Church Cemetery. We located it, there
was part of an old building standing at the bottom of the cemetery. In the middle of the cemetery was some
very large monuments with the name "Barkley" on them. We found several graves with Gwaltney names
and recorded them. From there we located a Ramie Mitchell Road where the Old Gwaltney farm was
supposed to be located. We drove across the first stream we had saw all day and came upon a mail box
with Gwaltney written on it, we stopped and asked if [ door answered by a Cliff Gwaltney } he knew
where the "old John Gwaltney farm" was located , he said you are standing right on it. The stream we had
crossed was " the South Yadkin River". He showed us where the old home stood up until 50 years ago and
took us to the old cemetery located on the farm, which was very overgrown and had stone markings, one
tombstone had writing on it but we could not read it. He told us that the family came from Virginia and
settled there on that land. Cliff drew us a map showing us how to get to Grassy Knob Church and
cemetery. We found it very easy, there is two cemeteries at the church, one on each side of the road. The
inscription on the church was {established 1789 ].
The old cemetery was on the left side of the road and had alot of graves with just stone markers . This has
to be the oldest cemetery in the area. We did not find any markings on the stones that we could make out.
The church is located off highway 901, where a sign is that says Grassy Knob Church.
From my view of the trip , it gave insight into all the names and facts that I have been recording. I found
nothing new but verified all that I have recorded about this family. The area John Gwaltney settled in is
very beautiful farming land. I now know where Grassy Knob , Dutchman's Creek , Yadkin River, Rocky
Creek, Jolly's Mtn, Brushy Mtns and the old Gwaltney Farm is. To me that made the trip worth while.
I have entered the notes from the cemeteries in the correct places on the family chart.
2. SOURCE OF NOTES: Frank Gwaltney ,Poers Knob,NC. June 4, 1936
To Mr. James G.W.MacClamroch Attorney and Counselor at Law ,Jefferson Standard Building
,Greensboro,NC.[Letter to James from Frank]
My grandmother who lived to be one hundred years of age [I am 78] told me that William Gwaltney came
from England about the year 1740 and settled near Williamsburg,VA. He had a family of children and one
of his sons, John Gwaltney, came to North Carolina and settled near the forks of the South and North
Yadkin Rivers. He was the progenitor of the North Carolina Gwaltney's. John had three sons, Robert,
Nathan, and Gaither. Robert had six sons, Howell, John, Joshua, Gilliam, Darius, and Joel. William
Gwaltney of Hickory,NC and Jay Gwaltney were both Baptist preachers and men of extraordinary
intelligence, education and ability. They were the sons of Howell Gwaltney, L.P. Gwaltney , the great
pulpit orator and J.L.Gwaltney, the lawyer ,of Taylorsville.NC , are the sons of James Gwaltney, who was
a son of Gaither Gwaltney. Solomon Gwaltney, another Baptist preacher who lived at Lenoir.NC was a son
of Joel Gwaltney. Jay Gwaltney had three grandsons, Baptist ministers, now living. My mother and
William Gwaltney of Hickory were first cousins. Cyrus Gwaltney, a descendant of Nathan, went to
Watauga Co.NC , before the War Between the States. His descendants live over in Tenn. The Gwaltney
family is to be found today in VA., NC, SC, Georgia, and Tenn.
[This letter was sent to me by Fred Gaultney]
From what I have gathered from various sources all this info seems to be correct. I don't know yet who
Frank Gwaltney is or where he fits in but he is one of the family. [C.Laws]
3. Source of Note for John Gaultney: Carolyn Laws personal talk with Frost Michaels.
Several years ago a grand-daughter of Cyrus Gaultney --Frost Michaels spoke with me about the Gaultney
family. She was then living in Banner Elk,NC ,Avery Co.NC. She told me that John Gaultney whose wife
was[ Lucinda -she possibly meant Nathan;s wife] had three sons that came over the mountains into WNC
from Virginia . Their names were, Robert, Nathan and William Gaither. Her father was Lee Gaultney, his
father was Cyrus Gaultney, Cyrus's father was Nathan Gaultney, Nathan's father was John Gwaltney. There
is a road in Avery County that is called Lee Gaultney Road. Their old home place is on this road and is still
standing today. I asked her where the family was buried and she said down at Boomer. Boomer is located
near Wilkes Co.NC. It is located between North Wilkesboro and Lenoir,NC

5. Notes from Marvin McClain , 1993 shared in 1998 sent by Dorothy Bradhaw on June 11, 1999.
1.Tradition states that John Gwaltney , of Welch ancestry , came down from Virginia in the year 1774 into
the State of NC with 3 sons, Robert, Nathan and William. They settled on what was called Rowans or
Rowe's Mountain , now in Alexander County. He first shows in the 1800 census of Iredell County,NC.
2. So it looks like John Gwaltney and his family arrived in this area shortly after the 1st census taken in
1790. The township of GWALTNEY in Alexander County was named for this pioneer family.
3. Tradition handed by Florence Gwaltney Mahaffey [ a ggrand-daughter of Joshua] also states he came
down from Virginia in 1774 and settled on the old home place. He did not want his family to fight against
the Mother Country of England in the Revolutionary War which ended in 1783. One son that we can not
name, was shot on the steps of his home from ambush, in retaliation we can but surmise.
4. Rowan County Deed Book 12, pages 225, has an entry on December 28, 1789 that John Gwartney of
Iredell Co.NC sold to George Wilkins of Rowan Co.NC the 300 acres State Grant # 1373 on the east side
of Dutchmans Creek adjoining William Cook and Daniel Holman, for L100. The deed was proved by
Henry Johnson at the Feb 1791 Court. Witnesses were Henry Johnson and William Holman.
5. In Rowan Co.NC Deed Book 11, page 552, it shows that on October, 25, 1786 a JOHN GAULTNEY
received NC STATE GRANT # 1373 at [50 cents per 100 acres] 300 acres on the North Fork of
Dutchman's Creek adjoining William Cook and Daniel Holman. There is no entry for the grant. Land entry
# 1710 of November 3, 1778 to James Whitlock specified 300 acres on the North Fork of Dutchman's
Creek" including John Gwaltney's improvements" indicates that he settled on the land prior to the time of
the entry, cultivated land, etc but failed to prove up the land grant. It is likely that the entry or survey was
assigned to John Gaultney. Whatever , it places John Gaultney in Rowan Co.NC prior to 1778.
6. Rowan County was established in 1753 out of Anson County. Iredell County was established in 1788
out of Rowan. Dutchmans Creek is now located in the upper eastern part of Iredell Co.NC
7. John Gwaltney moved to Iredell Co.NC in 1789 and he ended up with 110 acres on the upper South
Yadkin River which is now in the North eastern section of Alexander Co.NC that was established out of
Iredell, Caldwell and Wilkes Co. in 1847. He also had 13 acres on Grassy Knob which is located in Iredell
Co. near the Wilkes Co. border. So the tradition that he established the Old Gwaltney Plantation must be
correct. That is where the old graveyard is, and the property has been handed down or purchased back
through the family since that time.
{ This farm and grave yard is located on Ramie Mitchell Rd. rd # 1458 in Hiddenite,NC Alexander
Co.NC [visited 1-15-2000 C.Laws} ]
There is an old graveyard on Alexander Road #1458 on the Old Gwaltney homesite, across from where
Darius Cook lived in 1977 when I visited his widow Maggie Mae Millsaps. She advised me not to go
prowling around as the wild brush and snakes might get me. Also there was only stone markers. However I
wish I had made the attempt. It is almost a certainty that all the older Gwaltney's with out cemetery records
are buried here, where John Gwaltney settled and Robert Gwaltney farmed and it has mostly remained in
the Gwaltney family to this day.[Personal entry Marvin McClain].
8. The Iredell County Tax List includes John Gaultney with 110 acres on the South Yadkin and an
additional 13 acres on Grassy Knob. Note that the name is spelled GAULTNEY. Someone has said that it
is pronounced with a "W".
9. John Gwaltney our known progenitor, shows in the 1800 and 1810 census lists. The 1820 census list
shows his as follows: 1male-16 to 26 , 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female -26-45, 1 female over
45.
He was farmimg as 2 agricultural workers are marked.
He evidently died prior to September 25, 1827 when his estate sale was held, and its account signed by
Sarah Weaver. We know that in 1800 John Gwaltney was 45 yrs old according to the census, which would
make him born about 1755. He had married Sarah Cook born about 1780 a sister to Richard Cook [died-
1805] and after John's death she had maried a Weaver. At his estate sale , a Nathaniel [Nathan ] Gwaltney
and Henry McLain made purchases.
[MM notes] --This must have been a 2nd marriage as this Sarah was too young to be the mother of Robert,
William and Nathan. ]
[ C.Laws note: I believe that John and Sarah Cook had a daughter named Sarah that married a Weaver.
Sarah Cook Gwaltney would have had to married very soon after John's death to have signed his estate
records and we find other listings for a Sarah Gwaltney later on. This may not be correct but it is an
opinion.]
There was a Sarah Gwaltney baptized at Dutchman's Creek meeting house on July 1, 1774 . If this Sarah is
John's wife then ,she had to have been born earlier than 1780. This also looks like John only had one wife.
[Marvin McLain notes ]
On December 22, 1854 , in Alexander County, Sarah Weaver, widow of John Gaultney sold to Louisa
Gaultney 108 acres on the South Yadkin River adjacent to Henry Patterson and Josiah Bradshaw for
$100.00. This is the land that John Gwaltney bought in three transactions in 1804 and 1805 as outlined
below.
1. On January 18, 1804 Hugh Herald sold to John Gwaltney for $200 silver dollars , 150 acres on
Patterson's Branch adjacent to Joseph Millsaps. The land having been granted to Peter Herald on August 7,
1797, witnessed by Shadrach Moseby and Willey Chaucey. [F:623]
2. On June 1, 1805 John Gwaltney bought from James McKay for $65.00, 50 acres on the South Yadkin
River adjacent to Joseph Sharpe and James Patterson with James Thompson witness and jurat. [G:118} He
sold 40 acres of this land to Elizabeth Sloan on November 22, 1809 [G:792]
3. On June 15, 1827 John Gwaltney for $ 75 sold to Randolph [Randle] Gwaltney, 50 acres on South
Yadkin River adjacent to James Patteraon and Joseph Sharpe, having been originally granted James
McKay or McCoy, witnessed by Henry Patterson and Howell Gortney . [N:4027]

[Marvin McLain Notes:] Land transactions by William Gwaltney included one on July 5, 1807 when he
bought land from John Lund for L 47, 57 acres on South Yadkin River adjacent Joseph Millsaps Jr. with
Nathaniel [Nathan] and John Gwaltney witnesses. On February 12, 1825 he and wife Phoebe along with
James Mayberry, John Sale and wife Susannah of Wilkes County sold to Abraham Mayberry for $1200.,
450 acres on both sides of Rocky Creek adjacent William Hughes and Robert King. As married women
they had no property rights, and this was an inheritance by Susannah Sale and Phoebe Gwaltney from
interest in Mayberry and it is probable that this is what brought on the sale. On May 3, 1827 Willaim
Gwaltney sold Isaac McCurdy 147 acres on a branch of the south side of the Yadkin River purchased by
Joseph Millsaps and Isaac Baker Sr. on February 26, 1783 adjacent to Nathan Gwaltney and Lowrance.

Notes for SLOAN GORTNEY:
William Sloan Gortney born 1806 ,estimate since he was listed as 44 yrs old in 1850 Ashe Co.N.C.
Census. He married Hilda, Hiley, or Mahala Shoemaker. She is listed in different census with these
different names. She was born abt. 1810 since she was listed as 40 yrs of age in the 1850 Ashe CO.N.C
Census . William Sloan is listed only as Slown Gaultney in 1830 Alexander CO. N.C. Census. The 1860
Yancey Co.N.C Census list him as William S.Gortney.
These records can be checked on the census.
William Sloan and Hiley Shoemaker Gortney moved to Yancey CO.N.C about 1860 since they were listed
that year. They lived in the Green Mountain area at the time of the census. They had 4 children with them,
Lucinda, Mary, Martha and David N.. They left one son in Ashe County, Franklin Greene Gortney who
was born in Ashe County and married Elizabeth Dunkin [ Duncan }. Franklin served in the war and died
from an injury , buried in Virginia.
William Sloan was a farmer and also ran a government still, he was injured during a fight and lost an eye
and later died, he is buried on Jacks Creek, Yancey Co.N.C. The exact location is not known. Hilda
Gortney is buried in James Letterman Cementery, Yancey CO. N.C.
Who William Sloan Gortney's parents are from records being searched it appears to be Nathan Gwaltney
and Lucinda Sloan Gwaltney. William Sloan and Hilda Gortney's first daughter is named Lucinda and the
second son is named David Nathan. William Sloan Gortney has the Sloan middle name and census shows
him being the first born son of Nathan and Lucinda Gwaltney.
No record has be found yet as to who is Hilda Shoemaker's parents. I am wondering if her father could
have been named Franklin since her first born son was named Franklin.
All the rest of their children married in Yancey and Mitchell Co.N.C and raised their families there.

Notes for ELIZABETH DUNCAN:
Note: I also have Elizabeth { wife of Franklin ] listed as maiden name of Duncan but her gravestone in the
Shepherd Cementery lists her as Elizabeth Shepherd Gaultney and her death date was July 12, 1910 [birth
date agrees w/other records]. So this means that she lived to be 85 and did live after Franklin was killed.
Our records were not clear on this but 1880 census listd her as head of family with Meredith as her son and
she was age 56.

Notes for FRANKLIN GORTNEY:
Franklin Gortney was the son of DAVID N.GORTNEY and Minerva Renfro Gortney. He married
Martha Melinda Letterman. Franklin was raised by his Renfro grand parents, as he was listed in their
household in 1880 Yancey County Census. He worked for James Letterman for several years before he
married James daughter Martha Letterman. James Letterman gave them several acres of land after their
marriage, where they built a house and raised their family. The house is still standing today.
Franklin Gortney was timber measurer. He was injured in Kentucky and later died in Winston Salem
Hospital following surgery.
Note: Information came from family sources that are still living.
Franklin Gortney and Martha Letterman Gortney are both buried in James Letterman Cemetery, Yancey
County,NC.
Franklin Gortney married Verel Howell after Martha died ,no children.
It would seem that Franklin Gortney was named after his uncle Franklin Greene Gaultney.
Why the surname has changed from Gaultney to Gortney is not known, except that census takers spelled
the names the way they sounded to them. According to research Gortney is the correct way to pronounce
the name. It started out Gwalmay, then Gwaltney, then Gaultney and Gortney. Ancestors and descendants
both use all the spellings.
