Since 1998 - Historical and Genealogical Resources
for the Upper New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia
WASHINGTON COUNTY, having an area of 463 square miles, is situated In the extreme western part of the State, and bounded on the north by Pennsylvania, east by the Blue Ridge or South Mountains, separating it from Frederick County, south and southwesterly by the Potomac River, and on the west by Allegany County. The surface of the county is partly mountanious, being crossed by a number of ridges, between which, however, are several fine broad valleys, drained by Antietam, Conocooheaque and Israel creeks. The minerals of the county have not been much developed. The principal rocks are limestone and slate. Iron ore is known to exist in abundance in several localities, and limestone in immense quantities. Hydraulic cement is found near Hancock, and below Williameport is a hard caleareous slate, which splits into parallel layers, takes a fine polish, and is very durable. Emery (corundum) is found near the Antietam. The soil is principally limestone, with some slate and white oak land.
In the eastern part of the county is the great valley of the Antietam Creek, commonly called the Hagerstown valley. This valley is mostly limestone land, which is unusually produclave, and gives crops of wheat and other grains, unexcelled by any portion of the State. The wheat is equally fine grains in quality as in quantity, and is manufactured inte excellent flour, there being a large number of mill seats, improved by fine merchant flour mills.
This valley has been made famous by the military operations of the great contending armies during the late war, and suffered largely from these operations. The great battle of Antietam was fought by the two armies with columns stretching north and south on either side and facing the town of Sharpsburg. So great is the natirral wealth and comparative power of this valley and the industry of the people, that but few traces can now be seen of the damage then done. This county ranks with the most productive and best populated, and is well supplied with transportation facilitles. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal follows the entire border on the Potomac River, and the WashIngton Co. Branch of the B. & O. R R., Western Md., and Cumberiand Valley railroads, give speedy access to most all parts, offering competition and Inducements for the business of the county, and adding much to Its present growth and prosperity. The principal productions are wheat, corn, oats, bay, potatoes, rye, wool, butter and live stock.
