Talbot County, Maryland Directory - 1878

TALBOT COUNTY occupies a central position among the Eastern Shore counties, being immediately on the bay shore, and bounded southerly and south.easterly by the Choptank River and Tuckahoe Creek, the former separating it from Dorchester and the latter from Caroline County. It is bounded on the north by Queen Anne's, which is partly separated from it by Wye River.

Seven-eighths of the outline of Talbot is bounded by navigable waters, and it has also running inland Third Haven, Harris and Broad creeks, and St. Michael's and Miles' rivers, dividing it into peninsulas or necks, a several cetisiderable islands, so that three-fourths of the farms have navigable water at their very doors, and of the balance the farthest is not five miles from a landing.

Talbot has a healthy, mild climate, (being tempered by the surrounding waters,) and is considered by its enterprising citizens as the garden spot of this section. The soil is a moderately heavy red clay loam, of very superior quality, easily tilled, retentive of manure, very productive, adapted to the growth of timothy, clover, wheat and corn, as well of fruits. The surface is neither hilly nor fiat, but sufficiently undulating to afford perfect natural drainage, leaving the whole surface entirely clear of swamps, ponds and stagnant water. The land is entirely clear of stone and rocks. Marl, of a very superior quality and easy of access, abounds in almost inexhaustible quantities in nearly every section of the county.

The waters of the county teem with the finest fish and oysters, while all kinds of game and wild fowl are plentiful in season. The Maryland and Delaware R. R., running from Oxford on the Treadhaven River, to Clayton, Delaware, 54 miles, with the numerous steamers, sailing vessels, and other smaller craft, which traverse the adjacent waters, give to this county facilities for cheap transportation not excelled by any other county in the State.

EASTON

The county seat, is the largest and most flourishing town in Eastern Md. It is conveniently located near the navigable waters of three rivers, being within one mile of steamboat landing at Easton Points, on Tred Avon; three miles east from Miles River and four miles west from Dover Bridge on the Choptank, at all of which points large steamboats run regularly to and from Baltimore- It is also the virtual ternilnus of the Maryland & Delaware Railroad, as here the offices of the Oompany, the repair shops and car houses are located. This road runs from Oxford, on tide water, to Clayton, 56 miles, where it connects with the Delawase Railroad for Wilmington, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

Easton was incorporated in 1754, and is governed by a Board of Commissioners, three in number, who have power to enact ordinances, enforce police regulations, make improvements, and levy and collect taxes. The Commissioners serve for three years, one being elected each year,in April.

Easton contains several very elegant churches. The Protestant Episcopal and the Methodist churshes are fine specimens of architecture, the first being of stone and the others of brick. There is a Protestant Episcopal Chapel, under the charge of the Bishop of the diocese of Easton, and a Friend's Meeting House, one of the oldest in the State, having been erected in 1685. The Court House is a massive and convenient structure of brick, erected in 1790. The schools include High, Grammar and Primary, supported by the county, and several private schools. There are three weekly newspapers published, and all are in a flourishing condition.

The land surrounding is well cleared and fertile, sells at from $20 to $100 per acre, according to location and improvements, produces 10 to 35 bus. wheat, 10 to 40 oats, 200 potatoes, 20 to 60 corn, and 2 tons hay. Population 3,500. W. H. Councell, Postmaster.
