Since 1998 - Historical and Genealogical Resources
for the Upper New River Valley of North Carolina and Virginia
SOMERSET is the southernmost Bay county of the Eastern Shore. It is bounded north by Wicomico County, east by Worcester, south by Pocomoke River and Sound, and west by Chesapeake Bay. The Pocomoke River which forms the south-eastern boundary, is navigable into Worcester County. Other navigable waters are the Manokin and the Annemessex, and Little Annemessex rivers, and Wicomico and Monie Creeks. All these waters run a good distance into the county, giving water communication to nearly all portions. The county includes the large islands, South Marsh and Smith's lying between the Chesapeake Bay and Tangier Sound. The surface is level generally, though sufilciently undulating -to give a considerable number of mill seats, improved mostly by grist and saw mills for local uses.
The soil In the northern part is a sand and clay mixed, and the lower section is mostly a strong clay soil well adapted to the growth of grain. The productions of the county are principally corn, wheat, oats and potatoes with some market vegetables and fruits. Sweet potatoes are cultivated very largely, and yield extraordinary crops. The soil of Somerset is particularly adapted to the growth of market truck, and with its mild climate, caused by proximity to the bay and ocean, no county can excel it in the production of early or tender plants. The greatest mine of wealth of Somerset County is in its inexhaustible oyster beds, which are unexcelled in their any country known. These include the greater part of the Tangier Sound, which produces the famous Tangier oysters. The oyster trade employs a very large portion of the population on the islands and shores of the Sound and rivers. Fish and wild fowl are also abundant.
The Eastern Shore Railroad, Dr. Geo. R. Dennis, President, extending from Crisfield to Delmar, Delaware, affords ample accommodations for freight and travel to most all parts of the county. The Worcester & Somerset Railroad runs from Newtown and connects with the Eastern Shore Road a few miles North of Crisfield. These, with lines of steamers and sailing vessels, to different parts of the county, give unusual means of transportation, and place all sections in easy reach of the markets of Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York.
