Queen Anne's County, Maryland Directory - 1878

QUEEN ANNE'S COUNTY, having an area of 422 square miles, is on the Eastern Shore of the Bay, extending from the State of Delaware on the east to the Chesapeake on the west, and is bounded on the north by the Chester River and on the south by Talbot and Caroline counties. It includes Kent Island the largest island in the Chesapeake Bay, which is about fifteen miles long. Kent Island is important in the history of Maryland as having been the site of the first white settlement within the State.

The surface is level and generally low, and the soils, though various, almostly of the kind known as white oak soil, with a red clay sub-soil are easily worked, and with reasonable attention are very fertile, producing excellent crops of grains and grasses. Much of this county is very fine. Kent Island and the central section especially exhibiting very fine and flourishing farms. Vegetable or truck farms are becoming numerous, as also are fruit farms and peach orchards.

This county is two-thirds bounded by navigable water, placing nearly all parts of the county convenient to market by bay vessels and steamboats plying north and south of it daily. The water is good, and the county is drained by numerous creeks, along which patches of forest dot every farm. Marl is abundant, and is much used as a fertilizer. Queen Anne's has unlimited supplies of fish, oysters and wild fowl in the inlets surrounding its shores, and here can be found some of the finest wheat, corn and grass fields in the State, as well as peach, apple and pear orchards. The construction of the Queen Anne's Railroad gives daily communication with Northern cities, and brings some of the most productive lands convenient to the best and principal markets.

CENTERVILLE

Centerville, the county seat, is situated at the head ot Corsica Creek, an arm of the Chester River. It has a landing on this creek for sailing vessels, within one mile of the town. It possesses rare facilities for communication with Baltimore. A daily line of steamers arrive at and depart from Queenstown, seven miles distant on the Chester River. The town is picturesque, and its position fine, situated on a hill which rises somewhat abruptly from the plane of the creek. It is the terminus of the Queen Anne & Kent Railroad, which brings it in connection by rail with Baltimore, Wilmington, Delaware, and all of the great markets of the Union. The buildings, private and public, as well as the volume of business, attest the thrift and progress of the town. It is in the midst of a beautiful, healthful and fertile country, which yields abundantly of grain and fruits. The climate, soil, health, and advantages of the town and surrounding country offer great advantages to those in quest of farms, truck gardens and fruit orchards. The land is three-quarters cleared, is composed of sand and clay loams, can be bought at from $10 to $75 per acre, according to location and improvement; yields 10 to 30 bus. wheat and 20 to 75 corn. Population 1,300. J. T. Hand, Postmaster.
