Patton Cemetery

Grayson County, Virginia

Location:  The Patton Cemetery is north of Galax near the New River
Directions:  This cemetery in Grayson County Virginia, is located beside Rt. 641 (Pattons Mill Lane), 1.3 miles from Rt. 634 (Waterwheel Road). The cemetery is on the west side of the road as you approach New River.

Comments:  This cemetery is on land that was owned by John Patton Sr., his first wife, Nancy Ann (Johnson) Patton, and his second wife Thursa (Segar) Noblitt Patton. The land was passed on to John Patton Sr’s son, Hosea Patton, and his wife Elizabeth (Hill) Patton. The land then went to Hosea Patton's daughter, Nancy Patton, and then to Nancy’s son, Thomas Patton, and his children. Mrs. Orpha Mae (Patton) Leagan was the last Patton to own this land, when it was sold in 1967.
There are many unmarked graves in this cemetery. Some of these may be spaces where the remains were removed to another cemetery when a proposed hydro-electric dam would have covered this entire area with water. The project was eventually cancelled.
