Elizabeth City was one of the eight original shires established in 1634, and in area the second smallest county in the StateAlexandria only being smaller. It lies on Hampton Roads, with the Chesapeake bay on the east and Back river on the north, thus being almost entirely surrounded by water. York county is on the north and Warwick on the west. The Newport News and Mississippi Valley Company extends into this county, facilitating the western travel very much. The products of the county are corn, oats and wheat. Fruit and vegetables of all kinds grow well here, and the dairy product is considerable. A large number of the inhabitants are engaged in the crab and oyster fisheries.
Hampton, the county court-houx, is a flourishing town and port, and the seat of that noble Institution, the Hampton Normal and Agriculture Institute. It is a State institution, and is now one of the most prosper ous. Its departments are varied, and very necessary and beneficial. It includes the following branches: Military, an engineer's, a girl's work, printing office and other industrial features.
Old Point, at the junction of Chesapeake Bay with Hampton Roads, is a favorite summer resort, and one of the finest on the Atlantic coast It has a superior beach for bathing, and the boating and fishing are especially attractive. The United States school of artillery practice is located here, Fortress Monroe being within one hundred yards of the Point.
Elizabeth City has an area of 49 2/3 square miles, 37,873 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $34.13 per acre.
