Botetourt county, named in honor of Lord Botetourt, appointed Governor of the Colony in 1768, was formed in 1770 from Augusta, extending at time of formation to the Mississippi river. This is one of the rock. girdled counties of Virginia it being divided on the east from Bedford by the Blue Ridge; on the west from Alleghany by the Rich Patch; on the south from Roanoke and Craig by Tinkers and North mountains; and on the north from Rockbridge by North and Purgatory mountains. The central part of the county is a fertile and beautiful valley, watered by the James river and the many creeks that flow into it from every section The Cow Pasture and Jackson rivers meet in this county and form the James. The Richmond and Alleghany which, following the course of the old James river and Kanawha canal, extends into the county from the east, almost to the centre, turning goes out at the northern end, and forming an 1., and Shenandoah Valley road, extending through the county front northeast to southwest connecting at Roanoke with the Norfolk and Western road, traversing the southern corner, gives people of this county facilities second to none other in the State for the transportation of stock and market products. Large quantities of corn, oats, wheat and tobacco. of superior quality is produced. Horses, cattle and sheep of improved and superior breeds are raise the many mountain ranges affording excellent pasturage There are a great many flouring and saw mills, several vegetable canning establishments, and at Indian Rock a manufactory of lime and cement. The dairy and orchard products are large, and sources of considerable revenue to the people. The principal minerals are coal and iron. There are several large iron manufactories, employing large capital and many men. The mineral springs are of high order and wide reputation, the principal ones being the Blue Ridge and Dagger's White Sulphur. At Fincastle are located the Ferro Mineral Springs of Virginia, owned and controlled by the Fincastle Mineral Springs Company, the waters of which are said to be of the highest excellence. The medicinal properties of Deerslake Mineral Springs water are also said to be of high order. Fincastle, the county seat, named after the home of Lord Botetourt in England, is a well-built, healthy and thriving town of eight hundred inhabitants. six miles from Troutville, on the Shenandoah Valley. and eight miles from Jackson's station, on the Richmond and Alleghany railroad and James river, with both of which points it has daily mail. telegraphic and express communication. The area of the county is 567 7/8 square miles, or 364,078 acres, and the land has an average assessed value of $6.14 per acre.
