in the County's early days and was Captain of the 2nd Battalion when the county was formed in 1793.
James and Patsy's other children were: Orville Anderson, b. 1813 d. 1850 who served as Clerk of Court
when the county seat moved to Independence, Evalina b. 1826 d. 1855 who Md. Fielden Hale on
10/15/1840, Elizabeth b. 1827, Emily b. 1833, Martha J. b. 1838, Robert E. b. 1840 and Rush b. 1841.

of the family were buried in the Atkins Cemetery at Providence. Lucy Byrd was b. 8/3/1812, d/o Barnett
Byrd and Ludia Swinney. Ambrose Atkins was s/o James Atkins and his 2nd wife Mary Hale. The Stones
above were children of Amanda Jane Atkins and James Stone. James Stone served in Co. I, 37th VA
Cavalry Battalion CSA and was wounded in action and may have died from those wounds, but was still
living on 10/31/1864.]

and is buried at Smithfield, VA. Martin Atkins served in Co. C, 63rd VA Infantry, CSA, as did Kennerly
Atkins. Daniel Atkins b. 8/22/1799 d. 11/20/1882, Elizabeth died on 3/6/1864 of smallpox.]

Catherine Cox. John Blevins, Sr. came to America with the British Army during the American Revolution
and relinquished his British citizenship and in so doing lost his title to real estate in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Samuel, above, sought to reclaim the estate and was denied any right to it. Other children were
Alexander b. ca. 1847, Emily b. ca. 1843, Adeline b. ca. 1837 and Nancy. Alexander served in Co. C, 45th
VA Infantry, CSA, enlisting on 3/20/1864 in Smyth Co., was taken prisoner of war at Piedmont on
6/5/1864, sent to Camp Morton, Indiana were he died on 9/23/1864, and was buried in grave #1129 in the
Greenlawn Cemetery, Indianapolis, IN.]

[General note on the Moore Family: Some of the Moores were not listed in the 1870 Census. Orville
Moore died in the Civil War of fever. He md. Rosamond Hale who d. in 1862. Most of the Moore family
were not in sympathy with the Confederate cause. Amos Moore befriended two abolitionists, Cook and
Bacon, who came to Grayson Co. in the early 1850s to encourage slaves to desert their homes and follow
the New River to northern states. With the approach of the Civil War, many of the Moore family moved to
Ohio.]

& Amelia Collins, before the Civil WAr. Joel thought he would be exempt from conscription because he
had lost an eye because of a flying woodchip. Nonetheless he had to serve, and enlisted in Co. D, 30th
Battalion VA Infantry CSA on 7/21/1862 and deserted on 10/18/1862, returned to to duty and deserted
again on 12/10/1862, and was finally discharged on furnishing G. W. Perry as a substitute. Joel & Matilda
livned on Rock Creek where he built and operated a grist mill. After an altercation with some of his
kinfolks, he bought an moved to a new location near Fisher's Peak in Carroll Co. where he died of
appendicitis on 9/3/1880. He is buried on the mountain top near two Indian graves. Joel & Matilda's
children were: Chapman Kenley b. 4/13/1864, Sarah b. 6/25/1867, Rosa b. 8/16/1871 and Utacy b.
11/26/1875.]

later a flour mill and machine shop near Hampton's Cross Roads (Baywood). The location was known as
Reavistown and now passed over by highway 58. The Reavis family men were outstanding machinists,
ironworkers and riflesmiths. They made bomb detonators (fuses) for the Confederate Army. George &
Sandy Reavis went to Wytheville and made guns for the Southern cause. After the war the rendered
outstanding service for the people of eastern Grayson Co.]

Susannah Nuckolls was d/o Charles Nuckolls, and is buried with her husband John in the Trimble
Cemetery, Galax, VA. John & Susannah had 7 boys and 6 girls most of whom went to Illinois or Indiana.
John Trimble organized a company of volunteers and went to Norfolk in the War of 1812. He acquired
1300 acres on Meadow Creek where he operated a grist mill and worked as a carpenter and mason. His
father-in-law, Charles Nuckolls gave him several slaves whom he set free. John Trimble worked for
James Toncry, contractor for the construction of the Court House at Greenville (Old Town) as a carpenter
and brickmason. Susannah, John's wife, came to view the work, and fell near the doorway with an
apparent heart attack. She was carried across the street to the Dickenson Ordinary where she died in a
matter of hours on 8/30/1833. John lived, at the time of his death, with daughter Rachel Trimble (b. 1810)
and her husband John Foster (b. 1821).]
